More than 98% of the volume of products supplied from Ukraine falls on freight transportation to Greece, carried out by sea and by road.
In most cases, the delivery of goods to Greece is carried out with the aim of their further movement to other countries of the world. It is no trade secret that the largest Greek port of Piraeus is controlled by the Chinese state shipping company Cosco. Located at the crossroads of commodity flows coming from Asia, Europe and the Middle East, it is one of the key transport hubs through which a wide range of goods from China is distributed, including those intended for the domestic market of Ukraine.
Greece also has ports on the Mediterranean, Aegean and Ionian Seas, has a large merchant fleet (in terms of the number of ships it ranks 3rd in the world). In addition, thanks to the developed network of roads, cargo can be easily delivered to Greece from any European country and carried out in the opposite direction.
For the most part, the transportation of goods to Greece from Ukraine is carried out by sea and by road. The selection criteria are the urgency of delivery, the nature of the cargo, the volume of the lot and the requirements for the mode of transportation. Due to the peculiarities of the territorial location and other objective factors, the delivery of goods from other countries by rail and air transport to Greece is almost never carried out (less than 2% of the total import volume).
Since Greece is a maritime state with the third largest merchant fleet in the world, and its shores are washed by the Mediterranean, Ionian and Aegean Seas, most cargo enters Greek ports with the help of ships. Sea freight from Ukraine is carried out either by bulk carriers – ships carrying bulk cargo – for example, grain (wheat, barley, etc.). Or by container ships – in standard containers, 20 or 40 feet in size. Also, for the transportation of rolled metal, industrial equipment, including non-standard in size, specialized dry cargo ships are used. Road transport is carried out mainly by tractors with a semi-trailer with a carrying capacity of 20-22 tons (the carrying capacity of a truck permitted in the EU countries). They can also use trucks with a lower carrying capacity and even light-duty vans (capacity 1.5 tons). Compared to maritime transport, road freight is a little more expensive, they are characterized by mobility and the ability to deliver the goods immediately to the address.
