Bulk cargo is a uniform and homogeneous mass consisting of particles and elements that are characterized by friability and mutual mobility. Particle sizes vary from 0.1 mm to more than 350 mm. Transportation is performed without tare. Sea transportation routes have been used to deliver products of different purposes since ancient times. Sea routes connect countries located on different continents. Transportation of bulk cargo by sea is a favorable solution when it is necessary to deliver goods of large volume and weight over long distances.
Types and features of bulk cargoes
Bulk, bulk cargoes are transported without tare, which allows to reduce costs. At the same time, the process of loading and unloading is simplified. The main types of bulk cargo:
Food. Grain and flour, cereals, pulses and cocoa beans, seeds, salt and raw sugar.
Industrial, which do not need protection from weather factors. Coal, ore, other minerals, sand and peat, timber.
Industrial, needing protection from weather factors. Mineral fertilizers, waste paper.
Bulk cargoes differ from bulk cargoes in their properties. Bulk products usually consist of uniform, homogeneous particles of approximately the same shape and size. Bulk cargo is more often a heterogeneous mass, which is difficult to pack in containers. Bulk cargoes include broken stones, lignite and peat briquettes, gourds and other agricultural crops.
Bulk cargo transportation by sea: peculiarities
Bulk cargo transportation by sea is carried out with the help of special vessels – bulk carriers. Bulk carriers differ in load capacity and speed. Cargo capacity varies within 1-150 thousand tons. A special feature of the vessel is several holds with hatches for loading and unloading. Loading and unloading operations are carried out by conveyor method or by cranes equipped with buckets. Some bulk carriers have loading and unloading devices.
Bulk carriers are universal and specialized. In the first case, they are suitable for transportation of different types of cargo. Specialized vessels are designed to deliver certain types of products, such as grain or coal. When developing a route, the size and capacity of the vessel are taken into account. Not every international port has berths for large bulk carriers. In order to accommodate bulk carriers, the port must have storage facilities. It is necessary to have a convenient transport interchange, special loading and unloading equipment and machinery.
To ensure the safety of cargo and speed up the process of delivery to the destination point, it is necessary to choose ports with the necessary infrastructure, including terminals, sites for transshipment and subsequent safe storage.
Transportation of bulk cargo by sea requires accompanying documents, including bills of lading, customs declarations and certificates. Documents confirming the origin of the cargo and compliance with industry standards are required. In some cases, special permits may be required if the cargo is hazardous to human health and the environment.
The peculiarity of the documents is the indication of the total weight and volume of the cargo. For comparison, when transporting other types of cargo, the number of places and tare units are indicated.
Bulk cargo transportation by sea: advantages
Sea transportation is an advantageous solution when you need to reduce transportation costs and preserve the consumer properties of goods. It is the optimal option for transportation of large shipments over long distances. Pros of sea transportation:
Affordable price. Due to the increased cargo capacity, the ship transports a large batch of goods in one voyage. As a result, the cost of transportation of a commodity unit is reduced. Unlike road transport, when using sea vessels there are no additional costs associated with the passage of toll roads, tunnels and bridges, as well as border crossing.
Increased security. During transportation by sea, the risk of theft or loss of goods is reduced to zero. At the same time, the probability of an emergency situation is significantly reduced compared to road or air transportation. Modern ships are equipped with advanced navigation and communication systems, which allows immediate assistance in critical situations.
Possibility of transportation of different types of cargo. Bulk, bulk, oversized and hazardous cargoes can be loaded onto the vessel in one trip. If motor transport is used, special vehicles will have to be selected for each type of product.
Sea routes are optimized for delivery of cargoes to different corners of the planet with the lowest costs. Geographical conditions allow you to choose the shortest distances to the port of destination to reduce costs and transportation time.

Bulk cargo transportation by sea: international code of conduct
Rules for transportation of bulk cargoes by sea are regulated by international standards – SOLAS-74, International Grain Code. In accordance with the code, appropriate fire safety measures are carried out on ships that transport bulk and bulk products.
The main hazards during transportation are related to damage to the hull of the bulk carrier, which more often occurs due to improper distribution of the transported goods. Improper distribution leads to instability and displacement of goods during transportation. Contact professionals to avoid problems. Basic requirements for the organization of transportation:
Uniform distribution in the compartment to eliminate the possibility of damage to the structure of the bulk carrier.
Availability of devices to determine the level of gas inside the compartment is necessary in cases when cargoes emitting poisonous substances are to be transported.
Equipping cargo compartments with ventilation systems that ensure air circulation and prevent dust particles from entering the living quarters. It is necessary to exclude direct air flows to dangerous self-heating cargoes.
Transportation of food products – cereals, sugar, salt, requires protection from moisture and penetration of foreign odors. Measures are taken to protect foodstuffs from spoilage by rodents and insects. The ship’s crew is provided with personal protective equipment for handling and servicing cargo en route.
