Types of dangerous goods

Business owners who regularly need to transport goods in Ukraine and abroad should know what dangerous goods are. Dangerous goods are substances and materials with certain properties that can provoke urgent situations associated with an increased risk to people, the environment and the surrounding environment. The cost of transporting goods marked ADR is usually an additional expense, which is associated with an increased risk and the need to create special safety conditions. The abbreviation ADR is the name of a regulatory act (Accord Dangereux Routier), which contains rules for the transportation of dangerous substances.

Types of dangerous goods

Classification of dangerous goods involves identifying groups of goods and substances that, under certain circumstances, can provoke situations that threaten the life and health of people. Many types of dangerous goods, such as explosive, toxic and flammable substances, pose a threat to the environment, buildings and technical structures under unfavorable conditions. The transportation of such substances is regulated by law. In order to provide services for the transportation of dangerous goods, a logistics company must obtain a permit. A license confirms the availability of resources and compliance with requirements. The following components are required to organize the process:

  • A fleet of special vehicles.
  • Personnel with permission to transport dangerous substances.
  • Knowledge of the law regulating transportation in Ukraine and other countries through which the route runs.

The main characteristic of dangerous goods is a high risk of an emergency that requires emergency intervention by rescue and medical services. To understand what is a dangerous cargo, you need to know what substances and mechanisms can harm people and the environment:

  • toxic;
  • explosive;
  • poisoning;
  • flammable;
  • poisonous;
  • radioactive;
  • caustic, corrosive;
  • highly flammable.

Depending on the degree of potential harm, cargo hazard classes are distinguished. Transportation rules are provided for each category. The manufacturer of potentially harmful substances, mechanisms, materials is obliged to indicate the class of dangerous goods in the marking. The logistics company creates conditions for safe transportation, taking into account the class indicated in the marking. In most cases, it is necessary to coordinate the route with the traffic police. Sometimes the truck is accompanied by police patrol cars.

Classes of dangerous goods

Classes of dangerous goods reflect the degree of potential harm that substances can cause. The storage and transportation conditions depend on the potential magnitude of the destructive or harmful effect. There are classes of dangerous goods:

  • extremely dangerous;
  • high danger;
  • moderate danger;
  • low danger.

For the transportation of dangerous goods, specially equipped vehicles are used, which are selected taking into account the state of aggregation of the substance (liquid, gaseous, solid). Cargo transportation in Ukraine and Europe is regulated by legal documents – the Law of Ukraine and ADR (ADR). In accordance with the ADR standard – an agreement between European countries on the procedure for transporting potentially harmful substances, there are classes of dangerous goods:

  1. Explosive. Includes substances that explode and cause fires with a detonation effect.
  2. Gases. This category includes liquefied, compressed, loaded and dissolved gaseous compounds under pressure.
  3. Flammable liquids, including gasoline and petroleum products, paints and varnishes and ethyl alcohol.
  4. Flammable solids, capable of spontaneous combustion, releasing gases that ignite upon contact with water.
  5. Oxidizing compounds, organic peroxides. The category includes substances that release oxygen, which provokes and maintains the combustion process.
  6. Toxic, causing mass infections, including arsenic, hydrocyanic acid, pathogenic microorganisms.
  7. Radioactive. Ore, structural elements and equipment made of radioactive metals.
  8. Corrosive. The category includes substances that corrode the skin, mucous membranes and other living tissues upon contact, including aggressive acids and alkalis.
  9. Other. Includes substances that become dangerous under certain conditions. For example, plastic that releases toxic gas when burned.

The cost of transporting products with a hazardous cargo class increases, which is associated with the need for special training for drivers and an increase in the resources expended by the logistics company. Drivers undergo special training, during which they study the likely consequences of a leak of harmful substances. Drivers receive detailed instructions on how to act and what to do in the event of an emergency.

Cargo hazard classes: what you need to know

ADR cargo is a separate category of goods, materials and substances that require special attention when organizing transportation. For such cases, special marking is applied to the cargo and the body of the vehicle. Brightly colored information plates are used for marking. Marking allows you to recognize a vehicle that carries dangerous goods at a distance. As a result, the level of road safety increases.

Letters are used to visually designate the class of dangerous goods. Thus, asphyxiating gases are marked with the letter “A”, flammable substances – with the letter “F”, toxic – “T”. The protocols provided for by ADR significantly reduce the risk of an emergency and negative consequences for people and the environment. Benefits of following ADR standards:

  • Improved transportation safety.
  • Preservation of material assets.
  • Simplification of the organizational process.

It is enough to follow the rules provided by law so that the cargo transportation process goes without complications. The transport category of dangerous goods reflects the precautions that a logistics company must take to prevent accidents and harmful consequences. Transportation of substances that are potentially dangerous is associated with increased risk, which is reflected in the price. Due to possible negative consequences, it is better to entrust such work to professionals – logistics companies with a good reputation and experience in providing such services. Simple measures will help protect the transported goods and people’s lives.
