Marine cargo insurance in wartime conditions

War has completely changed how sea transport works. In the past, a standard marine insurance policy was enough. Now, without special war‑risk coverage, shipping is simply too dangerous. Mines, drones, missile attacks – they’re not theoretical anymore, they’re part of the daily reality. That’s why war risk insurance and insurance of marine vessels have become essential. Without them, shipowners and cargo owners are left exposed.

Ukraine, together with major global insurers, launched the Unity Facility. This program covers war risks for both ships and cargo, giving exporters the confidence to keep moving goods even under fire. Premiums have gone down, and trade routes have stayed open.

Insurers have also adapted. They track the situation, assess risks route by route, and tailor policies to each voyage. For exporters using the Black Sea, insurance isn’t just a formality anymore – it’s survival. Marine insurance now acts as a shield, protecting cargo and keeping entire industries running.
