A factory needs a batch of raw materials delivered. A trading company needs to send goods to a buyer in another country. For large volumes and long routes, rail freight can be more cost-effective than road delivery. NEOLIT arranges these shipments within Ukraine and across borders: we choose wagons for the load, agree on dispatch arrangements with the stations and handle the paperwork.
Rail freight within Ukraine and abroad
At Neolit, our rail freight services cover two types of routes. Within the country, this means freight services in Ukraine from the departure station to the destination station, with arrangements agreed at both ends. Across borders, the pattern is the same, but there are transit countries, different documents and a change of track gauge. You tell us where the goods will be loaded and unloaded and describe the shipment. We take care of wagons, rates, paperwork and shipment support.
What goods do we transport by rail
We handle rail cargo transportation from raw materials to finished products:
Raw materials and bulk cargo: grain, coal and ore.
Industrial products: rolled metal products, pipes and machine tools.
Packaged goods: paper, packaged food and building materials on pallets.
We start our rail logistics work with the load’s dimensions, weight and sensitivity to the weather. Only then do we look for rolling stock. Safety requirements here are strict.
Covered, open and flat wagons
Goods sensitive to moisture go in covered wagons. These protect the load from rain and snow and keep it out of sight. An open wagon has no roof: it is loaded from above with a crane or excavator. A flat wagon is open on all sides. It carries heavy machinery and oversized loads that physically won’t fit in a standard wagon. We prepare a separate securing plan for these loads.
Tank wagons and specialised rolling stock
Agricultural businesses use hopper wagons for grain. Tank wagons are used for liquid chemicals and edible oils. There isn’t always enough specialised rolling stock, so it’s best to send the request early.
International transport and cargo transfer at the border
The main complication is the track gauge. In Ukraine it is 1,520 mm, while in many European countries it is 1,435 mm, so the wagon can’t just continue along the route. There are two options: transfer the goods to European rolling stock or swap the wagon’s bogies for ones suited to the other track gauge.
We route international rail freight through less busy border crossings. We agree on the route with the authorities in the transit countries, prepare SMGS/CIM consignment notes and handle customs clearance. Forfreight from Europe, the same gauge issue is still there; it just works in reverse. The shipment can use a sea or road leg too, if needed. But combined logistics deserves a separate conversation.
How we organise a rail shipment
First, the shipment details. We need its dimensions, weight, hazard class and the stations at both ends of the route. The station must confirm that it will accept and dispatch this specific load on the requested dates, so we don’t skip this step. At the same time, we calculate the transit tariff for every section of the route. Then we choose wagons for the load and have them sent to the station.
Dispatch is the most critical stage of moving freight by rail. Cargo can’t be secured on a “that’ll do” basis. Where needed, we prepare a securing plan (NTU) and agree it with the station management. A load that shifts in transit costs more than any money saved here. We also do the paperwork: customs declarations, certificates and quarantine permits. Every day during the journey, we check where the wagon is and report its status.
What affects the rail transport tariff
We work out the cost of rail transport services for each shipment. There isn’t a single price list. A specialised hopper costs more than a general-purpose flat wagon. The type of wagon is part of the calculation. Whether the fleet is state-owned or private matters too. Next come the load’s weight and the distance. A longer route brings down the cost per tonne-kilometre. Station charges, shunting work, security and customs procedures are added separately. We calculate the tariff for free. If a sea or road leg joins the chain, this becomesmultimodal transport, and the calculation changes.
FAQ about rail freight
Do you arrange road delivery from the station to the recipient’s warehouse?
Yes. After unloading at the station, the goods are taken to the warehouse. We arrangeroad transport for this leg.
What if the sender has no rail siding?
That isn’t an obstacle. The wagon can be loaded at a public freight station or a terminal, with the goods brought to the station by road.
Can you schedule regular dispatches of several wagons?
Yes. We agree on volumes and dispatch dates in advance. We plan when to have the wagons at the station based on their availability and what the station can handle.
Can goods be stored temporarily at the station before dispatch?
That depends on the station and whether it has room for your load. We check the storage period and conditions before dispatch.
Can we change the destination station after submitting the request?
Yes. This is called reconsignment: the wagon is directed to another station while still in transit. The service is charged separately.
