Dimensions and weight standards for freight transportation are a set of regulatory indicators that determine the maximum permissible dimensions and weight of vehicles with cargo. The standards are developed for trucks that travel on public roads. They are necessary to protect road infrastructure, ensure traffic safety and maintain fair conditions for all participants in the freight transportation market. In Ukraine, the system of standards is developing dynamically – in recent years, there has been a transition to European standards, modern control and liability mechanisms are being introduced.
Dimensional and weight standards for freight transportation are the limits established by law for the dimensions and weight of vehicles with cargo. They include parameters:
Weight restrictions are aimed at protecting road surfaces and bridge structures from destruction, as well as ensuring road safety. In recent years, Ukraine has been reforming the control and standardization system in accordance with European practice.
The main official documents that determine the overall weight standards for freight transportation:
The listed documents are supplemented by the regulations of the Ministry of Transport and orders of the State Transport Safety Service – Ukrtransbezpeka.
Standards for dimensional and weight parameters of vehicles without a special permit in 2026 in Ukraine:
The parameters are standard when driving without a special permit. Exceeding at least one parameter automatically puts the vehicle in the category of overloaded, oversized.
Exceeding the established indicators entails the imposition of administrative fines on the carrier – from 8,500 UAH if exceeded by 5-10%, to 51,000 UAH if exceeded by more than 30%. Liability may arise even if violations are automatically recorded by WIM systems – weighing in motion. Regulation creates economically disadvantageous conditions for the development of a business in overloading. As a result, road wear is reduced. To avoid problems, use the services of Neolit Logistics, which professionally and promptly delivers cargo to any point in the world.
If the vehicle exceeds the regulatory dimensions or weight, the carrier must issue special documents and permits:
Additional permits are issued for a specific vehicle and route, indicating the time of movement, permissible speed and escort. In order to transport goods of greater weight or size than prescribed by law, the transport company follows the procedure:
Without permits, transportation in excess of the norm is prohibited, entails fines and a ban on movement.
The system for controlling overall weight indicators includes:
The carrier and the owner of the vehicle may be liable depending on the situation and circumstances. The maximum weight of the cargo and the dimensions of the vehicle are key elements of the regulation of road freight transportation in Ukraine. Compliance with the norms helps:
In 2026, with the correct registration of permits, carriers can safely and legally carry out transportation above the basic restrictions.
Axle load standards are important for freight carriers when planning loading in order to avoid fines and delays on the road. Axle load table for freight carriers in Ukraine:
| Axle category | Indicator |
| Single axle | 11 t for standard trucks, when driving on public roads – 10-11.5 t |
| Drive axle | Up to 11 t |
| Tandem axle | 16 t for standard trucks, up to 18 t for special container transport with additional permission |
| Tridem axle | 22 t, up to 24 t for special container transport with additional permission |
The permissible deviation (error) is up to 2%. In Ukraine, standards close to European ones apply – 11 tons per single axle, 16 tons per double axle and 22 tons per built-up axle. These are the basic values for trucks with divisible loads. General restrictions on gross weight apply – up to 40 tons for conventional trucks and up to 44 tons when transporting containers, with an additional permit up to 46 tons. Practical recommendations for carriers:
In 2026, the procedure for issuing permits for the movement of vehicles exceeding the overall and weight standards is regulated by the provisions of the Law “On Motor Transport”, the Law “On Road Traffic”, and Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 30 (Rules of passage for oversized and heavy vehicles). To obtain additional permits, you need to prepare a package of documents:
In some cases, additional agreements with the owners of engineering networks and local governments, an agreement for police escort are required.
In the EU countries, uniform European overall weight standards for trucks operate. The main regulatory documents are Council Directive 96/53/EC and Directive (EU) 2015/719. The first, approved in 1996, establishes permissible axle load standards and maximum dimensions (length, width, height).
It is directly applicable on the territory of all EU member states. Directive 2015/719 made important amendments to 96/53/EC, adapting the standards to the new requirements. The permissible weight and length for environmentally friendly and alternative vehicles – electric trucks and combined systems – have been increased. Conditions have been introduced for European Modular Systems (EMS) – longer and heavier trucks and efficient combinations (tractor, semi-trailer, trailer). What standards are in force in the EU for 2026:
Although the EU sets minimum European-wide standards, member states can introduce their own standards for domestic transport. For example, in Finland and Sweden, the movement of longer and heavier road trains is allowed – over 25 m long, weighing up to 60 t.
Axle load standards in EU countries are regulated by Directive 96/53/EC. Here is a table of axle loads in EU countries:
| Axle Category | Indicator |
| Single axle | 10-11.5 t |
| Twin axle | 11.5-19 t depending on axle spacing and configuration |
| Twin axle | In the range of 21-24 t depending on configuration and country road regulations |
In different EU countries, the figures may vary. For example, in Poland it is usually 11.5 tons, on certain roads – 8-10 tons.
If the vehicle exceeds the established limits in length, width, height or weight, the carrier is obliged to obtain an individual permit for the transportation of heavy, oversized cargo in the country where the movement is planned.
Independent organization of international transportation requires knowledge of the legislation of each country of the route, the features of obtaining permits and control practices. Cooperation with a professional freight forwarder Neolit Logistics is a tool for reducing risks and optimizing logistics, an opportunity to avoid fines and transport downtime.
