2024: The cost of using the roads in Spain will increase

The 2024 motorway toll increase is inflation-adjusted at 4.03% based on an existing formula agreed between the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility (MITMS) and private companies that have been awarded various concessions across the country. In this context, the toll increase formula applied by the ministry and the private companies that own the highways benefits the latter, as the 4.03% increase exceeds November’s annual increase in the consumer price index of 3.2%.
However, according to the publication, this does not mean that the 4.03% increase in highway tolls will fall entirely on the shoulders of drivers. The government now has to decide whether to fully implement the increase for citizens or to use only a portion of it and compensate the remaining companies with the contract through other mechanisms. In a worst-case scenario, the government could even apply a more significant increase to offset the reduction set for 2023. It also notes that it is difficult to predict precisely, as the formula has actually increased fares from 8.4% to 9.46%, and the government has already capped this increase at 4% to reduce the impact on citizens. It is noted that 23.3 million euros have already been allocated to compensate companies for this percentage difference.
